Strength training for over 55s in Williamstown and the Barossa
Get stronger, stay steady on your feet and keep doing the things you love. Supervised by an Accredited Exercise Physiologist and built around your body.
Why strength matters more after 55
We lose muscle and strength as we age, and we lose it faster when we stop using it. You notice it in everyday things first: getting out of a low chair, carrying the shopping, the stairs, getting up off the floor.
The good news is that muscle responds to training at any age. People in their 70s and 80s get measurably stronger with the right program. The earlier you start, the more you keep, but starting later still makes a real difference.
Not a gym program
A generic program doesn't know about your knee replacement, your sore back or your blood pressure. Ours starts with an assessment, and every exercise is chosen for you. Your exercise physiologist supervises your sessions, watches how your body responds and progresses things gradually. No loud music, no crowded classes and no judgement.
Who it is for
- You have noticed everyday things getting harder and want to turn that around
- You want to stay independent and keep up with the garden, travel, golf or the grandkids
- You have arthritis, back pain or a joint replacement and aren't sure what is safe
- You have never lifted weights and a gym feels intimidating
- Your GP has told you to do some strength work but you are not sure where to start
How it works
- Initial assessment (60 minutes). We talk through your health history and goals, then test your strength, balance and mobility so we have a starting point to measure against.
- A plan built around you. Every exercise is chosen for your body, your conditions and what you want to get back to.
- Supervised sessions in the clinic. Your exercise physiologist is with you, adjusting as you go, and progresses the program at a pace your body can handle. Your home exercises sit in the Moveify app.
- Retesting. We repeat your tests so you can see what has changed, in numbers, not guesses.
Medicare, private health and funding
You don't need a referral to book. If you have a chronic condition, your GP may be able to refer you under a chronic condition management plan (often called a care plan), which gives you a Medicare rebate for up to 5 allied health visits a year. Your initial assessment can be bulk-billed with a GP care plan. Most private health funds also cover exercise physiology under extras, and we see DVA and NDIS clients too. How Medicare and funding work.

Common questions
Am I too old to start strength training?
No. Research consistently shows adults in their 70s and 80s build strength with resistance training. We start where you are and build up at a pace your body can handle.
I have arthritis. Is strength training safe for me?
For most people with arthritis, the right strength training reduces pain and improves how the joint works. We choose exercises and loads that suit your joints and adjust them as you go.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly. If you have a chronic condition, a GP care plan can give you a Medicare rebate, and most private health funds cover exercise physiology under extras.
What do the sessions look like?
Sessions are in the clinic, supervised by your exercise physiologist, individually or in a small group depending on your plan. You also get home exercises in the Moveify app.
